‘Szczesny’ hangs up his gloves to spend time with his family

It’s time to focus on family as recently parted ways with Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has decided to hang up his gloves at the age of just 34. The forward was previously linked with a move to

Saudi Arabia but the move never materialised, with Juventus ultimately terminating his contract after being rejected by their plans. It had also

been suggested that the Polish goalkeeper might choose to hang up his gloves once his family were happy living in Turin.

Now, Szczesny has confirmed on social media that he has called it quits after an 18-year career.

“I left my hometown of Warsaw in 2006 to join Arsenal with one dream – to make a living as a professional footballer. Little did I know that this was the beginning of a once-in-a-lifetime journey,” he posted. “Little did I know

that I would play for the biggest club in the world and play 84 times for my country. Little did I know that football was not just a way to support myself – it was my life. “

Not only have I achieved my dreams, but I have reached places that even I could not imagine. I got to play at the top level with some of the best players in history and I didn’t feel inferior at all. “

I found soul mates, made unforgettable memories and met people who had a huge influence on my life. And I owe football everything I have and everything I am…”

“But I gave football everything I had. I gave 18 years of my life, every day, without exception. Every day, my body was ready for the challenge but my heart was not. I felt it was the right time to focus on my family – my amazing wife Marina and my two wonderful children, Liam and Noelia. “

So I have decided to retire from professional football. It’s a time of reflection and gratitude as this journey comes to an end. “

There are so many people I would like to thank here but I will try to reach them one by one. But to the fans, a special thank you for walking this journey with me, for the support and the criticism, for the love and the hate, for being the most beautiful and romantic part of football. Without you, none of this makes sense! Thank you!”

“Every story has an end but in life, when one thing ends, a new one begins. Only time will tell where this new path will take me but if the past 18 years have taught me anything, it’s that nothing is impossible and trust me, I’m going to dream big!”

Szczesny began his career in the Legia academy before being snapped up by Arsenal and making his senior debut in 2009.

He made 181 appearances for the Gunners, winning two FA Cups, before joining Roma on a two-year loan. Szczesny joined Juventus permanently in

2017 and has made 252 appearances, winning three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa Italiana.
